Beware of “Internet Register Ireland” Scam

We received an official looking letter from an organisation called Internet Register Ireland a few weeks ago. Since the tone of the letter made them sound like the Irish domain registrar IEDR we paid a bit more attention to the letter, especially as they indicated that we needed to act in order to keep our registration with them up to date.

On closer reading however this turned out to be a scam. Internet Register Ireland is a German outfit with absolutely no affiliation with the Irish domain registry. They are a website that seems to have listed numerous Irish businesses and then contacted those businesses to ensure that their listings are up to date.

However, the catch is in the small print at the bottom of the form that they require you to return to update your details. By signing and sending back the form you are agreeing to pay €958 per year to this company for the next three years.  The “order” is then extended each year indefinitely unless three months written notice is given to the company.

These folks have been at this lark for quite a few years now and so they must be having some success. Our own internal processes ensured that this landed on the right desk so that it could be assessed correctly. Hopefully others will see this and it will help to raise awareness of the scam.

FBD is currently listed on this website and this has been done without our knowledge. We have asked to be removed, so we’ll see what happens.

Haiti Earthquake Appeal

Aid agency Trócaire is responding to the earthquake that struck south of the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince and is appealing to the Irish public for funds.

Trocaire's Haiti Appeal - Donate TodayThe UN has described this disaster as the worst they have ever dealt with.

Trocaire’s emergency programme manager, Maurice McQuillan says that their “immediate priority is to save as many lives as possible by rescuing trapped survivors. After that the focus will be getting survivors the shelter, food and cooking equipment they need. Homes, schools, shops and businesses have collapsed in Port-au-Prince where over 2 million people live”.

Please donate today to Trócaire or any of the trusted aid organisations that are working on the ground in Haiti.

Government Urges Water Conservation

As the adverse weather conditions have resulted in a shortage of water supplies, the Government and local councils have urged people to conserve water. We couldn’t agree more and wholeheartedly support this call and would urge all our customers to use water sensibly.

As regular readers will know, we published a blog post in advance of the big freeze before Christmas with a range of tips and advice on how to protect your home and family from the then forecasted extreme weather conditions. One sentence in that post advised that “in freezing conditions you can leave the kitchen tap trickling (very slightly) as moving water will not freeze.”

Our own estimates are that a very slight trickle in a tap would be the equivalent of two toilet flushes in a 24 hour period. We also considered that given our own experiences of the terrible damage and trauma experienced by customers when pipes burst that it was prudent to offer advice of this nature. Furthermore we reckoned that the quantities of water used in this manner to prevent burst pipes were going to be far less than the water lost when pipes do actually burst.

Our aim will always be to advise our customers as to how best to protect their homes and their families. Obviously, we do not condone irresponsible wastage of water and we regret any misinterpretation of the advice we gave in good faith.

We did also advise our readers of that post that “if leaving home for Christmas do not turn off your heating, reduce it to a minimum, e.g. 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the evening.  A simple timer can be bought in most DIY outlets.” Now that the thaw has started to set in, it is recommended for everyone that the insulation on water pipes, tanks and cisterns be checked to ensure that it is adequate.

In 2008, ten original colour illustrations by Harry Clarke (1889-1931) which were executed for Hans Christian Andersen’s ‘The Fairy Tales’ were presented to the gallery. In 1916, London publishers, Harrap & Co., published three editions of ‘The Fairy Tales’ by Hans Christian Andersen, illustrated by the then unknown young Irish artist, Harry Clarke.

The colour illustrations, all in pristine condition, have been in a private collection since the 1920s. They appeared for sale in June 2008 as part of a special exhibition at The Fine Art Society in London, where they were purchased and presented as a gift to the National Gallery by businessman Lochlann Quinn and his wife.

The ten colour illustrations by Harry Clarke, produced for ‘The Fairy Tales’ by Hans Christian Andersen (1916) are:

  • The Garden of Paradise
  • The Snow Queen
  • The Nightingale
  • The Tinderbox
  • The Wild Swan
  • The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweeper
  • The Swineherd
  • The Travelling Companion

Focus Ireland

We’re in the business of insuring homes, but we are also conscious that there are many out there who don’t have their own home. Focus Ireland is an Irish charity who’s mission is to advance the right of people-out-of-home to live in a place they call home through quality services, research, and advocacy.

Focus Ireland invites all of us to take action in helping to alleviate homelessness in Ireland. Their current campaign is seeking to address the needs of the 5,000 young people currently living in State care facilities who at the age of 18 are often abandoned or fall through the cracks and end up marginalised, homeless, with addition problems or getting involved in crime. Take action by completing their petition to the Minister for Children & Youth Affairs, Barry Andrews TD.
